Bricks

First thing we did when we got out the door
Was build up a fence where there wasn't before
Brick by stupid brick
We bought our Authenticity
Each end was open and the fence wasn't high
With holes everywhere it came up to our eye
I guess we thought we were safe
Dying for publicity
And when the fence falls down (and it can't stand) well, our careless past will strip our crown and show our hand
So we'll build a new fence only smaller this time
Harder to crack, but not easier to climb
And wallets empty as our minds
With a bag of bricks to drag around

Statues

It was nearly fall when the boat sprung a leak
not before long the ground was awash
Galoshes kept our appendages dry
While grey skies taunted our prospects
It never occurred to paddle ashore, to drop the sails and use the oar
Months went by which drenched our hopes
November came and froze the ropes
Ice consumed our boots and trapped our feet
Cracked the raft and snapped the cleats
It never occurred to paddle ashore, to drop the sails and use the oar
The storm subsided and the sun thawed the snow
But we stayed frozen from head to toe
The statues never sailed ground
never grew and never drowned
It never occurred to paddle ashore, to drop the sails and use the oar

Taking Credit

You could have had, just a slice of that cake
You could have two, even, if that’s what you wanted to take
No one could know, you weren’t a glutton for sure
They might have guessed, but the truth gleaned pure
And when the dust settled,
And the reflection was clear
The only thing we could see
Was your face in the mirror
And you didn’t even blink
At how the road wasn’t yours
You took the lions share credit
Of another game’s scores
You could have had, just a bit of one song
No one would know it wasn’t yours all along
Your mind was cold and filled with blind desire
You borrowed blankets instead of building a fire
It was never your heart,
that spoke it aloud,
It was never your voice
That ran it aground
It was never yours to say
It was yours to record
But its yours on paper anyways,
Yours on paper anyways

Welcome to your life; there's no turning back
Even while we sleep we will find
You acting on your best behavior
Turn your back on mother nature
Ev'rybody wants to rule the world
It's my own desire, it's my own remorse
Help me to decide. Help me make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever last forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do, I'll be right behind you
So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Ev'rybody wants to rule the world
